Preparing electronics for shipping boxes
If you’re one of those people who saves all the information that comes with new purchases, and can find them, you’re one step ahead of the rest of us. Most manufacturers will advise you, generally indicating you should save the box it came in. This rarely being the case for most, we’ll move on to the next step.
Remove any ink or toner cartridges from your printers and fax machines. Store them in sealable plastic bags (we do it individually). Toner cartridges can be tricky because once they are opened, it is best to keep them horizontal. As with most other items, assure they are snugly in the moving boxes with lots of crushed paper to keep them in place. It is best to put a layer of crushed paper down first and lay the toner cartridge on top. This will absorb shock and reduce the possibility of the plastic cracking from stress.
Printer trays that are not removable should be taped closed, just as you do the access doors of the device. Disconnect all removable cords and use shrink wrap to secure them. Place bubble wrap around the printer, finish with packing tape, and find moving boxes that leaves about a two inch margin all around, or slightly more. This is a good time to use packing peanuts, but crushed paper will work too. Layer the bottom of the box with either, and place the printer on top of it. Fill the sides and top as you did the bottom. Be sure to seal the bottom, top, and sides with packing tape in two layers, for security. Get a red marking pen and draw arrows pointing up, writing the words fragile on each of the sides, as well as identifying the contents.
