Moving boxes for heavy kitchen objects
When packing plates, glassware, and other heavy fragile items, 32 ECT strength is simply not sufficient. The containers needed are our 44 ect heavy duty boxes (18 x 18 x 22) that are super-strong. Our preference is for new ones, since the integrity of the seams and walls are most important. Used boxes may fail. For the average household,
Start with the larges dishes on the bottom and work up with the smaller plates on top. Always lay them flat and never on their sides. Stemware and glasses should be packed in a separate moving box. We suggest investing the relatively small amount in cell dividers. Wrap each glass in a light layer of bubble wrap prior to placing in the cells. Depending on the height of your glasses, it may be possible to place more than one layer in the moving box; using cardboard to completely cover the bottom layer, before starting the second. Should there be insufficient room for a second layer, used enough crushed newspaper to pack the box snuggly; not allowing any room for shifting during transit. Fill up any remaining space with linen napkins, placemats, or figurines wrapped well in bubble wrap.
Another tip for this kind of packing is the use of foam beads. However, they can be rather distracting when unpacking, and are hard to pick up when free. We’ve remedied the problem by using large and small bags filled with them. Use sandwich sized for small spaces, and plastic shopping bags from the grocery store, tied tightly, for large space fillers . Bubble wrap works well as a cushioning agent as well as a space filler. Crushed paper has its advantages if balled up with care. In any case, it is imperative the moving kits are sturdy and leave no room for shifting.
