Moving supplies for packing books

Whether you’re sending books across the country in a moving van, or to your brother in the next state, how you pack them in cardboard boxes can make the difference in their arrival. The first consideration should be value. Moving costs, whether by parcel post or moving van, is generally based on weight. Is it worth it to ship all those paperbacks or bargain novels? Cull out those volumes that have no intrinsic or sentimental value to you and either donate them to your local Veteran’s Administration, library, or your garage sale.
Those deemed worthy of transporting should be put into an appropriate moving box; preferably one that has not been previously used and stored where it may have any moisture. Dampness not only damages the cardboard boxes and weakens it; but may also infuse your tomes. Good books, especially old ones, warrant wrapping in brown paper before placed in the shipping box. You can buy it or simply use brown paper shopping bags from the market. Make certain the container is of sufficient size and integrity. We recommend the standard medium size moving boxes of 18x14x12 It allows for easier handling, strength, and sides that do not have significant flex.

For the actual packing, it is best to place hard-covered ones into the moving kits first, in an upright position: meaning the spines rest up against the wall of the container. They should be snug against each other but not tight enough to cause damage when unpacking. When the first layer is completed, use paperbacks to fill the voids, and crushed newspaper or other packing (Styrofoam bubbles, etc.) to fill the box. You want to be certain nothing slides around in transit, allowing for the possibility of damage to book edges. We have used dishcloths and hand towels with great success; and it provides more room for other items when packing up linen and towels.
